Night Vision astronomy continues to expand with more and more amateurs buying military-grade night vision gear. As Gavin Orpin told us in a guest blog post last year, night vision “has given me a completely new aspect of the hobby to explore.” He’s able to observe Deep Sky Objects through his portable Tele Vue-85 that would have been impossible to see otherwise from his home near central London.
We’ve taken advantage of the full-field capability of our 55mm Plössl by introducing a night vision specific converter lens that extends its focal length to 67mm; thereby reducing the eyepiece’s apparent field of view from 50° to 40° to exactly match the field of view of the PVS-14 objective. That’s a 20% increase in true field-of-view seen with a simple screw-in accessory lens!

Al Nagler Goes “Full Circle” on Night Vision
Back in 1971, while an employee of Farrand Optical Company, Al Nagler was given the task of designing an eyepiece for a spiffy-new, high-tech gadget designed by ITT Corporation: a night vision device. He designed an eyepiece to view the 40° field of view created by the image intensifier tube. Now, after almost 40-years of evolution, the latest generation night vision monocular that Tele Vue is selling uses an eyepiece at least inspired by Al’s Design — if not exactly the same!
A package arrived at Tele Vue’s door on the Monday before the 2019 Northeast Astronomy Forum (NEAF). It was quickly ushered into the corner office where a small group gathered around the parcel. When opened, three black boxes were withdrawn. For the first time, after many months of development in secret, each black box was opened by a member of the design team. At Tele Vue, we call these internal product reveals a “magic moment” — when fresh prototypes are unboxed in the office for “first light.” This was a “magic moment” unlike any other; one 50-years in the making. The Apollo 11mm commemorative eyepiece had landed!

Here we’ll take up the multi-purpose Imaging System, or “is,” scopes and their associated accessory packages.

The ancient Allegheny Plateau formed from a long-ago regional uplift in the Paleozoic Era. Over the eons, rivers and minor waterways eroded the plateau to form mountainous terrain. The plateau arcs from central New York, through the top-half of Pennsylvania, dives though the heartland of Ohio and West Virginia, and terminates in Kentucky. NEAF has always been a great show for us. It’s a wonderful chance for people to get their hands on our equipment and really see and feel the care and quality we put into our products. While five of us were constantly busy showing scopes, making eyepiece recommendations, and enjoying talking amateur astronomy, no one was busier than my father.
